Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
